The Thompson-Nicola Regional District has rescinded all of the evacuation alerts and orders that were in place due to the White Rock Lake fire.
The massive 833 sq. km. fire is now under control, according to the BC Wildfire Service, which means it will not spread further because of the suppression efforts of firefighters.
The lightning caused fire was discovered on July 13 before it eventually grew to its current size because of drought conditions as well as hot, dry, and windy weather.
Five weeks ago, on August 5, the fire caused considerable damage to the communities of Monte Lake and Paxton Valley.
According to the TNRD, the White Rock Lake fire has destroyed or damaged 66 structures within regional district boundaries, including 32 homes. There were other structures lost in the North and Central Okanagan, outside of TNRD boundaries.
The Columbia Shuswap Regional District has also rescinded evacuation alerts south of Falkland impacting properties in the Cedar Hill area as well as around Pinaus Lake.
Tuesday’s easing of orders and alerts comes one day after 133 properties near Kingsvale and Brookmere were given the all clear from the July Mountain wildfire.
The BC Wildfire Service says people returning home after an extended evacuation order should contact their local authorities who have set up supports for them.
“Crews are actively seeking out visible smokes and working off of scan maps to find hotspots [near the White Rock Lake Fire],” a Tuesday morning update form the Wildfire Service said.
“Although smoke may be visible, at this time there is no threat of further spread. Smoking stumps and roots within the fire perimeter pose no risk of fire spread.”
